It refers to the body's ability to maintain relatively stable internal conditions, allowing cells, tissues and systems to function in a coordinated manner, despite constant variations in the external environment. This dynamic balance is essential for the survival, adaptation and proper functioning of the organism throughout life.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"789\" data-end=\"990\">In practice, homeostasis is not the absence of change, but the ability to continually adjust physiological processes, keeping them within functional ranges compatible with life.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"992\" data-end=\"1036\">The concept of homeostasis in biology<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1038\" data-end=\"1414\">From a biological point of view, homeostasis describes the self-regulation mechanisms that allow the body to detect internal or external changes and respond accordingly, correcting deviations and restoring functional balance. These mechanisms result from the integration of various systems, including the nervous system, the endocrine system and the immune system.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1416\" data-end=\"1582\">This adaptive flexibility allows the organism to respond effectively to environmental variations, metabolic demands and physiological challenges over time.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"1584\" data-end=\"1631\">Physiological self-regulation mechanisms<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"1633\" data-end=\"1764\">Maintaining homeostasis depends on feedback systems that adjust the body's responses to detected changes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"1766\" data-end=\"2076\"><em>Feedback<\/em> negative, which corrects deviations and promotes a return to the functional range, such as regulating body temperature<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1766\" data-end=\"2076\"><em>Feedback<\/em> positive, which temporarily amplifies a response in specific contexts, such as blood clotting, labour or certain inflammatory responses<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2078\" data-end=\"2193\">Both mechanisms are physiologically necessary, as long as they occur in a controlled and appropriate manner.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"2195\" data-end=\"2247\">Practical examples of homeostasis in the body<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"2249\" data-end=\"2378\">Various physiological variables are maintained within functional ranges through homeostatic mechanisms, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"2380\" data-end=\"2554\">Body temperature<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2380\" data-end=\"2554\">Blood pH<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2380\" data-end=\"2554\">Glucose concentration<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2380\" data-end=\"2554\">Fluid and electrolyte balance<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2380\" data-end=\"2554\">Blood pressure<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2380\" data-end=\"2554\">Oxygen and carbon dioxide levels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"2556\" data-end=\"2811\">When, for example, body temperature rises, the central nervous system activates thermoregulation mechanisms such as sweating and redistribution of blood flow to the skin, facilitating heat dissipation and recovery of thermal equilibrium.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"2813\" data-end=\"2880\">Importance of homeostasis for the functioning of the organism<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"2882\" data-end=\"3135\">The ability to maintain homeostasis is fundamental for cellular metabolism, neuroendocrine function and the immune response. It allows for the adequate supply of nutrients and oxygen to cells, as well as the efficient elimination of metabolic waste.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3137\" data-end=\"3358\">Research into physiology and healthy ageing has associated effective homeostatic regulation with better functional adaptation over time and a lower burden of persistent low-grade inflammation.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"3360\" data-end=\"3402\">When homeostasis is compromised<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"3404\" data-end=\"3668\">When the body is exposed to intense, repeated or prolonged stimuli, it can become more difficult to restore internal balance. It is continually exposed to antigens from the digestive tract, including nutrients and microorganisms, and plays an important role in regulating the inflammatory response and distinguishing between potentially inflammatory stimuli and tolerable stimuli.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6113\" data-end=\"6350\">When these regulatory mechanisms don't adjust properly after the resolution of a stimulus, functional alterations can arise that jeopardise the local and systemic balance, contributing to states of persistent inflammation.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"6352\" data-end=\"6384\">Homeostasis in everyday life<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"6386\" data-end=\"6688\">Homeostatic processes are influenced by multiple factors in everyday life, including food, movement, sleep, and the management of <em>stress<\/em> and rhythms of life. These elements condition the way the body responds to internal and external demands and its ability to adapt over time.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"6598\" data-end=\"6658\">Understanding homeostasis from an integrative perspective<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"127\" data-end=\"522\">Homeostasis refers to the body's ability to maintain a functional internal balance in the face of variations in the external environment. In practice, this balance translates into the way in which the body regulates essential functions such as temperature, inflammation, metabolism, sleep, the response to <em>stress<\/em> and tissue recovery processes, allowing continuous adaptation to the demands of everyday life.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"524\" data-end=\"996\">Homeostasis is a dynamic process that results from the interaction between different systems in the body.
