Esta capacidade pode ser dividida em equil\u00edbrio est\u00e1tico e equil\u00edbrio din\u00e2mico.<\/p>\n<p>O equil\u00edbrio est\u00e1tico refere-se \u00e0 capacidade de manter a posi\u00e7\u00e3o corporal sem deslocamento. O equil\u00edbrio din\u00e2mico corresponde \u00e0 capacidade de preservar a estabilidade durante a realiza\u00e7\u00e3o de movimentos, como caminhar, mudar de dire\u00e7\u00e3o, subir escadas ou ultrapassar obst\u00e1culos.<\/p>\n<p>Com o avan\u00e7o da idade, \u00e9 frequente verificar-se uma diminui\u00e7\u00e3o progressiva do equil\u00edbrio. Esta altera\u00e7\u00e3o resulta de m\u00faltiplas modifica\u00e7\u00f5es fisiol\u00f3gicas associadas ao envelhecimento, que influenciam os sistemas respons\u00e1veis pelo controlo postural.<\/p>\n<p>Entre estas altera\u00e7\u00f5es incluem-se a redu\u00e7\u00e3o da for\u00e7a muscular, a diminui\u00e7\u00e3o da proprioce\u00e7\u00e3o, as altera\u00e7\u00f5es dos sistemas vestibular e visual, bem como a menor velocidade de rea\u00e7\u00e3o.
