What is osteopathy used for?
Osteopathy is used to assess the relationship between different body systems, including the musculoskeletal, visceral, and cranial systems, as well as the autonomic nervous system, aiming to understand the origin of imbalances rather than just alleviate symptoms. In Integrative Osteopathy, the approach begins with an individual clinical assessment and can help with pain, tension, stiffness, changes in mobility, and difficulties in the body's adaptation to exertion, posture, or daily stress.
Is osteopathy indicated for chronic pain?
Yes. Osteopathy can help in some situations of persistent pain, particularly when there is a musculoskeletal component, limited mobility, or associated tension. Treatment is always determined after an individual clinical assessment.
Osteopathy can help with a range of problems, including:
* **Back pain:** This can include pain in the lower, middle, or upper back.
* **Neck pain:** Stiffness and pain in the neck, often related to posture or injury.
* **Headaches and migraines:** Certain types of headaches, particularly tension headaches and some migraines, can be addressed.
* **Shoulder pain:** Issues like frozen shoulder, rotator cuff problems, and general shoulder stiffness.
* **Arm and hand pain:** Conditions such as tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, and nerve entrapment.
* **Hip, knee, and ankle pain:** Problems like arthritis, sports injuries, and general joint pain.
* **Foot pain:** Including plantar fasciitis and other foot-related issues.
* **Sports injuries:** To help with recovery and rehabilitation from athletic injuries.
* **Work-related strains:** Musculoskeletal issues arising from repetitive movements or poor posture at work.
* **Pregnancy-related pain:** Discomfort in the back, pelvis, and other areas during pregnancy.
* **Postural problems:** To help identify and correct imbalances in posture.
* **Joint stiffness and reduced mobility:** Improving the range of motion in joints.
Osteopathy can assist with acute or chronic pain, sports injuries, postural changes, muscular tension, joint stiffness, and mobility limitations. It can be beneficial for lumbar pain, neck pain, sciatica, tension headaches, shoulder, hip, or knee pain, discomfort associated with physical exertion or posture, and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunctions, such as jaw tension, bruxism, pain when chewing, or a feeling of blockage. At Integrativa, each case is individually assessed to define the most appropriate approach.
How does the first consultation work?
During the initial consultation, a comprehensive clinical assessment is carried out, gathering information on symptoms, health history, lifestyle, and the individual's goals. Relevant medical examinations or reports are analysed where appropriate. This assessment allows for the definition of a personalised support plan.
The first consultation includes treatment or just an assessment?
The initial consultation includes a clinical assessment and, whenever indicated, may include manual treatment. The objective is to understand the probable origin of the symptoms, identify functional limitations, and begin an approach tailored to each person's condition.
How long are the appointments?
The duration can vary depending on the type of session and the follow-up plan, usually between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on each case.
How many Osteopathy appointments will I need?
The number of consultations varies depending on the clinical condition, symptom progression, treatment goals, and individual response. After the initial assessment, the Osteopath will explain the recommended frequency and adjust the plan as treatment progresses.
Do I need to have exams to book Osteopathy?
It is not mandatory to have tests to book an appointment. However, if you have X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, or medical reports, these can help complement the assessment. If necessary, further medical evaluation may be recommended.
Is osteopathy suitable for children and adults?
Yes. Osteopathy can be adapted for different ages, from babies and children to adults, always taking into account the developmental stage, health status and specific needs of each person.
What is the difference between osteopathy and physiotherapy?
Osteopathy uses a global manual approach, considering the relationship between mobility, body structures, and functional balance. Physiotherapy focuses on the recovery of function, movement, strength, mobility, and physical capacity. In some cases, the two areas can complement each other.
Can physiotherapy and osteopathy be combined?
Yes. At Integrativa, different clinical areas work together. The fact that our Osteopaths are also Physiotherapists allows us to integrate both areas of knowledge, contributing to a more complete and adjusted approach to each case.
Can Osteopathy be combined with Clinical Pilates or exercise?
Yes. In many cases, manual treatment can be supplemented with Clinical Pilates or therapeutic exercise to improve mobility, strength, motor control, and stability. This combination can be especially useful for recurrent pain, postural changes, sports injuries, and relapse prevention.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
You should bring comfortable clothing, relevant medical examinations or reports, a list of medications if applicable, and information about previous injuries, surgeries, or treatments.
Can I have Osteopathy even without pain?
Yes. Some people turn to Osteopathy to improve mobility, reduce tension, optimise function, and prevent discomfort associated with posture, physical exertion, or repetitive routines.
What is Physiotherapy for?
Physiotherapy aids in functional recovery, pain relief, improved mobility, strength gains, and injury prevention, always following an individual clinical assessment.
When should I book a physiotherapy session?
You should consider booking a session when there is pain, limited movement, loss of strength, difficulty with daily activities, recovery after an injury or surgery, or a need to prevent new injuries.
