Throughout the school years and often already in early adulthood, there are frequent doubts about the future: what course to choose, what field to pursue, what profession makes sense. For many young people, these questions bring anxiety and the feeling that they need to make a decision without sufficient information.
Vocational Guidance is a form of support designed for these moments. In this article, we explain what it consists of and how the process works at Integrativa.
What is vocational guidance?
Vocational Guidance is a process led by a psychologist that helps the young person to make more informed decisions about their academic and professional path. It is based on self-knowledge and analyses five dimensions:
- Motivation: what leads the young person to give their best
- Skills: the abilities that are revealed more easily, such as numerical, verbal or spatial reasoning
- Personality: the way they think, feel, and relate to others
- Interests: the areas that arouse curiosity and a desire to know more
- Professional profile: affinity with different work areas
The relationship between these dimensions helps to identify paths that make sense for the young person, and not just for the expectations of other people or the trends of the moment.
In addition to identifying areas and paths, the process seeks to develop the ability to reflect, autonomy, and decision-making skills, which continue to be useful in future choices.
How the process works at Integrativa
The process is individual, progressive, and focused on the young person. The goal is not to decide for them, but to support them in making an informed and conscious choice.
- First phase – Initial interview: Individual interview with the young person and their guardians to learn about their personal, academic and emotional background, their preferred subjects and the doubts that motivated the request.
- Second phase – Evaluation and exploration: Two to three individual sessions in which psychological tests are applied regarding motivation, aptitudes, personality, and interests. In parallel, the young person explores areas of study and professions, which helps to broaden horizons and question established ideas.
- Third phase – Delivery and decision-making: Final session with the young person and their guardians, in which the report is presented and explained, and the options for the course of action are discussed. This moment is a starting point for the decision, and not a closed-ended answer.
The process usually takes two to three weeks and respects the pace of each young person. The duration of the sessions and the interval between them are adjusted to their time and needs.
The final report
The report brings together the results of each assessed dimension, with graphs and a description of each. It concludes with a synthesis that links the results to the young person’s educational path and preferences, and points out the study paths that are most suited to their profile. It can be consulted whenever new decisions arise, for example at the time of applications for higher education.
Because it makes a difference
With so many options for courses and professions, deciding without support can be difficult. A Vocational Guidance process can help:
- Reduce anxiety associated with choice
- Avoid hasty or ill-informed decisions
- Knowing alternatives that had not yet been considered
- Making choices more suited to the profile of each young person
A unique process, from an integrative perspective
At Integrativa, the Vocational Guidance is led by the Psychology team, composed of professionals with professional credentials from the Portuguese Order of Psychologists. The process was developed and customized based on the team’s experience, which has accompanied many young people in their academic and professional choices, and is regularly reviewed using the latest psychological assessment tools.
The choice of a path does not depend solely on grades or career prospects. It also involves values, family context, and the young person’s image of themselves in the future. Therefore, we seek to understand the young person as a whole, with empathy and a focus on their development.
Scheduling a vocational guidance session allows you to take the first step towards a more informed and conscious choice.
