Breast cancer is a significant public health issue, primarily affecting women. In Portugal, approximately 6,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed annually, which equates to roughly 11 new cases per day. Of these, only 1 in 100 occurs in men. Although the survival rate is increasing, treatments cause many side effects that can limit quality of life. These include fatigue, loss of mobility in the shoulder on the operated side, and a reduction in certain functionalities.
When does the role of a physiotherapist specialising in oncology come into play?
Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in the recovery of breast cancer patients. The physiotherapist is responsible for informing the patient, defining recovery goals, treating and improving physical condition, and, above all, encouraging her. Intervention with manual therapies pre- and post-operatively is essential for correcting muscle imbalances, postural changes, muscular or joint pain, and scar problems.
The importance of physiotherapy in the treatment of breast cancer
Physiotherapy is fundamental in all phases of treatment, accompanying the necessary interventions. The main areas of practice are:
- Radiotherapy: Minimising the effects of tissue retraction.
- Mastectomy (breast surgery): Scar rehabilitation and mobility of the surrounding tissues of the remaining breast (in the case of conservative surgery – lumpectomy).
- Lymphedema attenuation: Reduction of swelling and improvement of lymphatic drainage.
- Breast reconstruction: Assistance in adjusting the tissues to the prosthesis or flaps, shaping the new breast to resemble the contralateral breast as closely as possible in shape and position.
The role of the Physiotherapist in a multidisciplinary team
Breast cancer treatment is increasingly carried out by a multidisciplinary team, where the physiotherapist is present at all stages of the process (pre- and post-operative). Their assessment and work are essential throughout the treatment. The physiotherapist guides the adoption of healthy habits and the practice of adapted exercises, aiming for a constant improvement in the patient's quality of life.
